Most damage during road transport is not caused by accidents — it happens because goods were packed or loaded badly. Long journeys mean hours of vibration, braking, bumpy stretches and changing weather. Good packing is the simplest way to make sure your consignment arrives in the same condition it left.

1. Choose the right packaging

Match the packaging to the goods. Corrugated boxes work for most light and medium items; use double- or triple-wall cartons for heavier contents. Machinery, heavy equipment and fragile industrial goods are better protected in wooden crates or boxes. Avoid reusing weak or damaged cartons.

2. Fill the empty space

Items should not move inside the box. Use cushioning such as bubble wrap, foam, air pillows or crumpled paper to fill gaps, and wrap fragile items individually.

3. Palletise where possible

Putting cartons on pallets makes loading faster and safer, and reduces handling damage. Stack boxes squarely with no overhang beyond the pallet edges, keep heavier boxes at the bottom, and secure the stack with stretch wrap and corner boards. Strapping adds extra stability for heavy loads.

4. Protect against moisture and dust

On long routes goods may pass through rain, humidity or dusty stretches. Stretch wrap or poly covers help keep out water and dust, and silica gel or moisture absorbers help for sensitive goods such as electronics, metal parts and textiles. Ask for a covered vehicle or tarpaulin cover when needed.

5. Label clearly

  • Consignee name, address and phone number on every package
  • Total number of packages (for example, 3 of 12)
  • Handling marks such as "Fragile", "This side up" and "Do not stack"
  • Any special instructions, such as keeping goods dry

6. Load and distribute weight properly

Heavy items go at the bottom and towards the front of the truck, with lighter items on top. Weight should be spread evenly across the floor. Use straps, lashing or wooden blocking to stop the load from shifting when the truck brakes or turns.

7. Document the condition at dispatch

Take photos of the packed and loaded goods, and make sure the number of packages is written on the consignment note. If there is damage at delivery, these records make insurance claims much easier.

8. Consider transit insurance

Even well-packed goods can face risks on the road. For high-value consignments, transit insurance gives you financial protection — ask what it covers before dispatch.
